Rafting the Yoshino River at Oboke: Seasons, Prices, Booking in English and a Gentler Alternative
Quick answer: The Yoshino River through the Oboke and Koboke gorges is one of Japan’s best-known whitewater rivers — it hosted the 2017 World Rafting Championship. The season runs roughly March to November (some operators stop at the end of October). A half-day trip costs about ¥8,000 and a full day about ¥13,000, usually for ages 12–13 and up, with English-speaking guides available and free pick-up from JR Oboke Station. Book online a few days ahead. Prefer something calmer? Take the 30-minute Oboke Gorge sightseeing boat (¥1,800).
I live in Tokushima and know the Oboke area well, but I’ll be honest: I haven’t been rafting here myself. So this guide is built from the operators’ official information plus my local knowledge of the area. If you’re looking for an adventure in Shikoku, this is one of the best-known.
Why the Yoshino River?

The Yoshino River cuts a deep gorge through the mountains of western Tokushima. Between Oboke and Koboke, the river runs over rocks and rapids between steep cliffs — ideal for rafting. In 2017 the area hosted the World Rafting Championship, the first time it was held in Japan.
When to go
- Season: roughly March to November, depending on the operator. Some, like Happy Raft, run from 1 March to 31 October.
- Summer is the warmest time to be on the water.
- After heavy rain, trips can be cancelled when the river is too high. Normal rain doesn’t stop them — you’ll be wet anyway.
Choosing a tour
There are several rafting companies around Oboke. Many have English-speaking guides. As an example, Happy Raft, which has an English website, offers:
| Tour | Price (adult) | Time | Minimum age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Half day (Oboke) | From ¥8,000 | About 3 h in total, 1–1.5 h on the river | Junior high school age |
| Full day (Koboke) | From ¥13,000 | About 6 h, about 4 h on the river | 12+ |
| Family | ¥8,000 (same for children) | About 3 h | From age 3 or 6, depending on the course |
- Prices are a little higher in peak season and Obon (mid-August), and ¥500 cheaper if you book online.
- Children under 15 must be with a parent or guardian.
- Happy Raft’s base is just across the border in Otoyo, Kochi, with free pick-up and drop-off from JR Oboke Station.

What to bring
Operators provide wetsuits, helmets and life jackets. You bring:
- A swimsuit to wear under the wetsuit (no cotton)
- Shoes that can get wet and have a heel strap (no Crocs) — rentals are available
- A towel (also rentable), sunscreen, and a strap for glasses
Booking and cancellations
- Book online in advance — English booking is available for the main operators.
- If the operator cancels because of high water or storms, you get a full refund.
- If you cancel, fees usually apply from about a week before (for example 30% from 7 days, 50% the day before, 100% on the day).
Getting there
- By train: limited express Nanpu from Okayama to Oboke Station (about 1 hour 40 minutes), or from Tokushima via Awa-Ikeda (about 1 hour 40 minutes). From spring 2027, the Nanpu becomes all-reserved, so book a seat.
- By car: about 45 minutes from Ikawa-Ikeda IC. The mountain roads are narrow — see Driving in Rural Shikoku.
A gentler alternative: the Oboke Gorge boat
If rafting isn’t for you, the Oboke Gorge sightseeing boat takes you through the same gorge on calm water, with views of the rock walls.
- Fare: ¥1,800 for adults (from September 2026), ¥900 for children.
- Time: about 30 minutes. Runs 9:00–17:00, all year, no booking needed.
- Cancelled in high water or strong wind.

Make it a trip
Rafting fits well into a day or two in the Iya Valley: raft in the morning, then visit the Iya Kazurabashi vine bridge and stay at a hot-spring inn. See Deep Iya by Car and Where to Stay in Tokushima.
